The Real Cost

I am sorry to post this, as it never gets easier. ‘Macha’, ID’d as ‘Stout Margaret’, eight year old OTTB mare rescued April 7th, 2021 from East Texas Equine in horrendous condition and tremendous pain(and a foal at her side) had only five days of ‘A better life’. Though I always hope for the best outcome, none of us can ensure that, try as we may.
What was said to be ‘abscesses’ was far, far more than that. Her hoof wall separated from the coronet band ( see attached X -rays) and reached the point of severe bone infection and what I would imagine an unGodly amount of pain. It only continued to worsen.
In the vet’s own words: ‘Even if money were not at all a concern, this is just too bad, too painful with nearly zero chance of recovery.’

Now.
Some will say I ‘shouldn’t let her go’. I strongly disagree.
Some may say ‘I would have tried this, or that’……..I must say that would be a terribly selfish and cruel thing to do.
As I do not wish to be one more person to hurt her, I feel this was the best decision for her. She had rest, care, a bath, medication to ease it all a bit , and respect in her last few days thanks to Shana. ( Bless her for that.)

You do not have to feel the same, but please do respect my(OUR) decision on her behalf.

I am so, so very sorry for ‘Stout Margaret’…….
And all like her.
